While none of our suggested Mardi Gras destinations are truly remote, and heading to Mardi Gras is not like mounting an Everest expedition, getting there and away, and how you’ll get around when you get there, are worth a bit of consideration.
As you'd expect, the larger cities covered here at All About Mardi Gtras will have a broader selection of airlines serving the nearby airport, as well as lodging choices in a wider selection of price points, and a greater number of ground transportation options. But even the smallest of destinations (Houma or Lake Charles, Louisiana) can satisfy all of your needs. Overall, getting to/from Mardi Gras (and making your way when you're there) should be relatively painless.
Once you make the decision to go, the links below will provide you with everything you need to plan your trip to any of our featured destinations.
All About Air Travel to Mardi Gras
Almost all of the destinations (with the exception of Houma, Louisiana) have their own airports. So the best bet for most Mardi Gras trips is to book your airfare directly to that city (New Orleans, Galveston, Lake Charles, Mobile, Pensacola, New Orleans, San Diego or St. Louis).
If you are in the mood for a bayou Mardi Gras, and are headed to Houma, Louisiana, the closest airport is in New Orleans (MSY). Houma is only 45 miles (or an hour drive) from the New Orleans airport.
While most travelers have their favorite online booking service, I have had nothing but good prices and excellent service from Air Gorilla. I’ve never booked anything but airfare through them, but they can also handle hotel and car reservations.
You can book your tickets right here by using the AirGorilla search box to the right.
Mardi Gras Airport Codes:
- Galveston, Texas - GLS
- Lake Charles, Louisiana - LCH
- Mobile, Alabama - MOB
- New Orleans, Louisiana - MSY
- Pensacola, Florida - PNS
- San Diego, California - SAN
- St. Luois, Missouri - STL
All About Lodging Choices for Mardi Gras
There are plenty of lodging choices, in a wide range of price points at nearly all of the Mardi Gras destinations profiled here at All About Mardi Gras. While you may not be able to get a four-diamond resort accommodation in Houma, LA, you can spend the night in a revitalized trapper’s cabin in the swamp at Houma's Wildlife Gardens. I assure you that is something you can’t do in San Diego or St. Louis.
Again, I’m sure most people have their favorite way of booking a hotel. For those that don’t, Hotels.com is a pretty good way to go.

All About Ground Transportation Around Mardi Gras
In the big cities that host Mardi Gras celebrations (New Orleans, San Diego, and St. Louis) you may be able to get away with taking a shuttle from the airport to your hotel, and then relying on public transportation and your own two feet from there, but for all of the other destinations covered here at All About Mardi Gras ( and even in the big cities), you’ll have more fun, see more, and get where you want to go when you want to be there if you rent a car. You’ll certainly need one to drive to and from the bayou destinations (Houma and Lake Charles, Louisiana).
Again, I’m sure most people have their favorite way of renting a car. For those that don’t, Enterprise has always offered good reliable cars/vans, and great service.
